Legendary Bluegrass Players Captured in this Once-lost Treasure
Showcasing the greatest Bluegrass players at their peak, performances
include legends Ralph Stanley, The Country Gentlemen, The Osborne Brothers,
Earl Scruggs, Del McCoury, Jimmy Martin and Roy Acuff. Step back in
time to a red clay, jamboree…
On Labor Day weekend 1971, producer-director Albert Ihde
and his crew shot the first feature film ever made about Bluegrass music
in Camp Springs, North Carolina.
Bluegrass Country Soul captures the sights, sounds and magic of this three-day
outdoor festival, the first of its kind, featuring Bluegrass veterans
and future stars alike sharing the primitive wood and cinder block stage.
This documentary does more than just capture one of the largest Bluegrass
festivals of that decade, it’s also an interesting mixture of live
performances, interviews, impromptu jam sessions and crowd footage of
live music set in a small town surrounded by the red clay and tobacco
shacks of North Carolina.
HIGHLIGHTS:
* Ralph Stanley’s 1971 edition of the Clinch Mountain Boys included
teenagers Ricky Skaggs on mandolin and Keith Whitley on guitar. Their
version of Man of Constant Sorrow gives a haunting preview of the “hit”
from the 2000 movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?
* Blue Grass 45, the first such Japanese group to tour America, and the
Blue Grass Alliance show the music’s scope and progressive side.
* Fiddler Chubby Wise, who put Orange Blossom Special on the map, and
Earl Scruggs, the banjo master behind Foggy Mountain Breakdown, get the
all-star treatment.
* The “King of Country Music,” Roy Acuff, makes a rare festival
appearance.
* The Camp Springs festival is history, yet thanks to Bluegrass Country
Soul we can experience this cultural phenomenon with new insight and a
fresh perspective.
* A well-done movie to appeal to Bluegrass, Americana and Folk fans young
and old.
* The commentary track by Fred Bartenstein, the original emcee of the
concert, is a wonderful mixture of history, musical lore, facts and personal
observations about the music, and his recollections having worked at the
festival a number of times. It is truly an added value for the casual
as well as the serious fan.
