Long before the post-punk skateboarders and BMX bikers decided to call their antics extreme, bullriders simply called it another day on the job. On January 24th, TIME LIFE (in association with PRORODEO FILMS) will release Ultimate Bullriding, the first-ever comprehensive DVD of the greatest, most intense moments from over 40 years of professional bullriding. Included in this 60 minute DVD are some of the greatest championship rides and wildest, most out of control wrecks of all time. Culled from the archives of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, Ultimate Bullriding brings viewers up close to the danger and courage of cowboys who set aside their fears to climb atop 2,000 pounds of raging fury.
Viewers will see superstar cowboys like Terry Don West, Ty Murray, and Tuff Hedeman square off against raging bulls including the infamous Bodacious. Ultimate Bullriding presents powerful, bone-crushing action as cowboys risk getting thrown, gored, hung-up or trampled all for the glory of winning the Gold Buckle. The footage takes viewers so close to the action, it literally hurts to watch. Also included is a recently uncovered bonus feature that showcases rodeo legend Jim Shoulders as he wins the all-around competition in the 1959 national finals.
Bullriding is a genuine American sport that was born out of the rodeo, a place for hard working ranchers and ranch hands to let off a little steam, test their courage and, yes, show off a bit of talent. Jumping onto a massive, bucking animal and refusing to let go is an act of sheer courage. The final throw, then the crushing landing, deserves even more veneration. In a sport where one out of every 15 rides needs medical treatment, the legends of bullriding truly walk alone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, rodeos drew more than 24 million fans in 2004 and. even the bulls are superstars (often worth up to hundreds of thousands of dollars), Some bulls even have their own line of signature merchandise and agents. Televised rodeo events draw 100 million viewers annually making it the fastest growing extreme sport in the country.
